The amount of time and money invested in leadership development initiatives for marginal return never ceases to amaze me. This can be at a one-on-one development level or relate to initiatives taken at a team or organisational level.

The purpose of this short blog is to identify what I believe is one major reason for this wastage in the hope that you can avoid this and get a full return on any leadership development initiatives undertaken.

When many leadership development initiatives are commenced there is often the thought that you will need to wait 3 months, 6 months or 12 months to see what impact this will have. Yet before the development initiative begins there is a question you can ask which will determine whether the development initiative has the opportunity of achieving success.

So what is that question? It is this: “What is planned at the outset to ensure this intervention is based on an honest foundation of what is going on, what needs to be addressed and what needs to be achieved?” This information is elicited by ensuring key stakeholders are involved early on.

This stage is crucial – crucial to ensuring relevance for the organisation and the leaders, crucial to getting early engagement and crucial for the right results to be delivered. Without this stage leadership interventions can develop a life of their own and yet have little relevance to the commercial needs of the business or the development needs of the leaders it is intended to assist.

Take the time to ensure any leadership development initiative you have undertaken has a well constructed stage at the outset designed to provide the honest foundation required for the leadership development to make a real and positive impact.
